This is a privileged area adjacent to the Retiro Park, the only green area in the centre of Madrid. It features all types of flats in buildings of varying quality. Los Jerónimos, near Puerta de Alacalá, is a key feature in this area. It is a residential neighbourhood consisting of majestic buildings and stately homes. It enjoys excellent communications and is very close to the Atocha train station. It is also a short distance from the main museums and places of interest in the city.
This is the smallest of the districts in Madrid that belong to the so-called "almendra central" (central quarters) of the capital. It consists of six neighbourhoods: Gaztambide, Arapiles, Trafalgar, Almagro, Ríos Rosas and Vallehermoso. These are noted for being very quiet neighbourhoods that still preserve small traditional shops and a feeling of living in a village where everyone knows everyone.
Thanks to the renovation of many buildings, the central area of Madrid is no longer a marginal area and has become the ideal place to live. Many of its streets are gradually being pedestrianised. It is a very lively and active area during the day and at night. The area of Justicia is particularly noteworthy as it includes the neighbourhoods of Malasaña and Chueca, which have been the gay area of Madrid since the 1990s.
Located in the city of Madrid but slightly further from the centre, the district of Chamartín includes the neighbourhoods that were built during the expansion of Madrid in the second half of the twentieth century. Here, we can find buildings that are more modern than those in the centre, and the tree-lined streets are also wider. El Viso deserves mentioning because it is a luxury residential area with private gardens and lush vegetation in a completely urban area.
